David told Abiathar the priest to bring him the ephod, and David inquired of Yahweh, 'Should I pursue the raiding band? Will I overtake them?'
He said to him, 'Pursue! For you will certainly overtake them!'

David and 400 men continued the pursuit and found them eating and drinking and enjoying themselves because of all the plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and Judah.

When David approached the 200 men who had been too exhausted to go with him, all the evil and worthless men who had gone with him said, 'Since they didn't go with us, they may take their wives and children, but we won't give them the plunder we retrieved.'
But David said, 'The portion of the one who goes into the battle will be the same as the portion of the one who remains with the equipment!'
And from that day on it was a law and ordinance for Israel, even to this day.
