Saul was in the thick of the fight when the archers spotted him and severely wounded him.

Saul said to his armor bearer, 'Draw your sword and stab me with it or else these uncircumcised men will come and abuse me.'

But his armor bearer was terrified and would not do it.

So Saul took his sword and fell on it.

When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him. So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men died together that day.
The next day when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they discovered Saul and his three sons lying dead on Mount Gilboa.

They stripped his corpse and cut off Saul's head.
And they hung his corpse on the city wall of Beth Shan.

When the residents of Jabesh-Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, all their valiant men went out and took the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan.

They brought them to Jabesh and burned them.

And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh.
