Early the next morning, Samuel went to meet Saul at Gilgal, and when he arrived, Saul said, 'May Yahweh bless you! I have carried out Yahweh's commands!'

'The army spared the best of the sheep and the cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh,' said Saul. 'The rest have been put under the curse of destruction.'

Samuel said to Saul, 'Yahweh sent you on a mission, saying, Attack the sinful Amalekites until they are exterminated. Why did you not obey Yahweh?'

Saul answered, 'But I did obey Yahweh! I brought back King Agag only after exterminating the Amalekites, and the army took the best sheep and cattle only to sacrifice to Yahweh.'

Samuel said, 'Is Yahweh more pleased by burnt sacrifices or by obedience? Certainly obedience is better! Because you have rejected Yahweh's word, he has rejected you!'

Saul said to Samuel, 'I have sinned by disobeying Yahweh, for I was afraid of the people and yielded to them. I beg you to forgive my sin.'

Samuel said to him, 'You have rejected the word of Yahweh, and Yahweh has rejected you as king. Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to one of your neighbors.'

And Samuel said, 'Bring me King Agag of the Amalekites!'

And Agag came toward him, trembling, saying, 'Death is bitter.'

And Samuel hacked Agag into pieces before Yahweh at Gilgal.
