Yahweh regretted that he made Saul king over Israel, but Samuel mourned for Saul. Yahweh said to Samuel, 'How much longer will you mourn for Saul? I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem, for I have chosen a king from among his sons.'
So Samuel did as Yahweh commanded and he never saw Saul again to the day he died. He went to Bethlehem and the town elders came to meet him, trembling in fear. They asked, 'Do you come in peace?'
'Yes, in peace,' said Samuel. 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Purify yourselves and come with me.'

So he invited Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice, and when they arrived he noticed Eliab and thought, 'Surely this is Yahweh's anointed!'
But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his height or appearance, for I have rejected him. People look at appearances, but Yahweh looks at the heart.'

Then Jesse presented Adinab, but Samuel said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this one either.'

So Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this one either.'

Jesse presented seven of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, 'Yahweh has not chosen any of these. Do you have any other sons?'
Jesse said, 'There is still the youngest. He is tending the sheep.' And Samuel said, 'Send for him. We will not eat until he arrives.'
So Jesse sent for him, and brought him over. He was reddish with beautiful eyes and handsome features.

So Samuel took a flask of olive oil and anointed him in his brothers' presence, and the spirit of Yahweh seized David from that day onward.
