At this time, Nahash king of the Ammonites was oppressing the Gadites and Reubenites harshly, gouging out each of their right eyes.

Nahash replied, 'I will make a treaty with you only if I may gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thereby disgracing all of Israel.'

The elders of Jabesh said to him, 'Allow us seven days to send messengers throughout Israel. If no one rescues us, we will surrender to you.'

When they told Saul what the men of Jabesh has said, the spirit of Yahweh came upon Saul. His anger flared greatly and he cut a pair of oxen into pieces.
He sent these throughout the lands of Israel with messengers saying, 'This is what will happen to the oxen of any who do not come out to march with Saul!' And the terror of Yahweh fell upon the people.
