Ahimaaz son of Zadok the priest said, 'Let me run and give the king the good news that Yahweh has rescued him from the power of his enemies.'

But Joab said to him, 'You will not be the bearer of good news today, for the king's son is dead.'

After bowing to Joab, the Cushite ran off. But Ahimaaz spoke to Joab again, saying, 'Whatever happens, let me go after the Cushite.'

Then the Cushite arrived and said, 'Yahweh has vindicated you today and rescued you from the power of all those who rebelled against you!'

The king asked the Cushite, 'How is the young man Absalom?'

The Cushite replied, 'May the enemies of my lord the king and all who have plotted against you be like that young man!'

The king then became very upset. He went up to the upper room over the gate and wept. As he went he said, 'My son, Absalom! If only I could have died in your place! Absalom, my son, my son!'

Joab went to the king and said, 'You love those who hate you and hate those who love you! I see that you would be more pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead!'

'Now get up and go give some encouragement to your troops, for I swear by Yahweh that if you do not, there will not be a single man left with you by nightfall!'
