Joab and David's soldiers were returning from a raid, bringing back a great deal of plunder.

When Joab arrived he was told, 'Abner came to the king, and he sent him away in peace!'

Joab went to the king and said, 'What have you done? Surely he came to spy on you and learn your activities!'

Then Joab left David, sending messengers after Abner without David knowing. They brought him back from the well of Sirah.

When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside at the gate as if to have a word in private with him.

But then Joab stabbed him in the belly and killed him.

So Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel during the battle at Gibeon.

When David heard about this, he said, 'I and my kingdom are forever innocent before Yahweh for the blood of Abner!'
