Around that time, the Philistines mustered their troops to fight a war against Israel. Achish said to David, 'You should understand that you and your men must go with me into the battle.'

Saul mustered all the Israelites and camped at Gilboa.

When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was completely terrified, so he inquired of Yahweh. But Yahweh did not answer him.

Now Samuel was dead and buried at Ramah, so Saul said to his servants, 'Find me a woman who is a necromancer so that I may go and inquire of her.'

His servants told him, 'There is a woman who is a necromancer in Endor.'

So Saul disguised himself with other clothing and set out accompanied by two of his men.

They came to the woman at night and said, 'Use divination to conjure the person I tell you to.'

But the woman said, 'Don't you know that Saul rid the land of mediums and necromancers? Why would you lay a trap for me so as to bring about my death?'

So Saul swore an oath by Yahweh, saying, 'As surely as Yahweh lives, you will not be punished for this matter. Now conjure Samuel for me!'

When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out loudly. When Saul realized it was Samuel, he bowed to the ground. Samuel said to Saul, 'Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?'

Saul said, 'The Philistines are attacking and God has turned away from me. He does not answer me, so I have called on you to tell me what to do.'

Samuel said, 'Because you did not obey Yahweh and carry out his fierce anger against the Amelekites, Yahweh has torn the kingdom from you and given it to your neighbor David.'

'Tomorrow both you and your sons will die, and Yahweh will hand the army of Israel over to the Philistines.'
