Saul took 3,000 select men from all of Israel and set out to find David and his men in the desert of Ziph.

David set out and came and saw the place where Saul and his general Abner were sleeping with the army camped all around them. He said to Ahimelech the Hittite and Abishai brother of Joab, 'Who will go down to Saul's camp with me?'

Abishai said, 'I will go down with you.'

So David and Abishai approached the army at night and found Saul asleep with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. Abishai said, 'Today God has put your enemy in your hands.'

'Now let me thrust the spear right through him into the ground! A second thrust won't be needed!'

But David said to Abishai, 'Don't kill him! Yahweh himself will strike down whoever brings his hand against Yahweh's anointed.'

'Now take that spear and the jug of water and let's get out of here.'

So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul’s head, and they got out of there. No one saw them, or was aware of them, or woke up. They were all asleep, for Yahweh had caused a deep sleep to fall on them.

Then David stood at the top of a hill a considerable distance away and called out to the army and Abner, 'Why haven't you protected your lord the king? You who have not protected Yahweh's anointed are certain to die! Look at where the king's spear and jug of water are!'

When Saul recognized David's voice, he said, 'Is that your voice, my son David?'

David replied, 'Yes, my lord the king. Why is my lord chasing his servant? What evil have I done?'

Saul said, 'I have sinned. Come back, my son David. I won’t harm you anymore. I have made a serious mistake.'

David said, 'Here is the king's spear. Let one of his servants cross over and get it.'

Saul replied to David, 'May you be blessed, my son David! You will surely succeed and accomplish great things!'

So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.
