So David hid in the field, and when the new moon festival came, the king sat down to eat at his usual place, but David's place was empty. But Saul said nothing about it that day, thinking 'Something must have happened to make him unclean.'
But the next day David's place was empty again and Saul said to his son, 'Why has Jesse's son not come to the meal yesterday or today?'
Jonathan replied, 'David urgently asked permission to go to Bethlehem, saying, "My family is holding a sacrifice and my brother ordered me to be there." That's why he hasn't come to the king's table.'
