Saul's wife was Ahinoam. His sons were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. His daughters were Merab and Michal.
There was intense fighting with the Philistines throughout Saul's lifetime. The general in charge of his army was his uncle Abner.
But no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel because the Philistines had said, 'Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords and spears!'
So the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to get their plowshares, mattocks, axes, and scythes sharpened.
The price was two thirds of a shekel for sharpening plowshares and mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening forks and axes.
So no one in the army had a sword or a spear. Only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.
And Jonathan killed the Philistine governor at Geba.
