The ark stayed in Kiriath-Jearim twenty years, then the whole people of Israel longed for Yahweh.

Samuel then said to all the Israelites, 'Banish all the foreign gods and Astartes from among you, serve Yahweh only, and he will rescue you from the Philistines.'

So the Israelites banished the Baals and Astartes.

They assembled at Mizpah and there Samuel became the judge of the Israelites.

When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had mustered at Mizpah, the Philistine leaders moved to attack.

When Israelites heard this, they were afraid, and said to Samuel, 'Do not stop calling on our god to rescue us from the Philistines.'

Samuel took a baby lamb and burnt it as a sacrifice to Yahweh, calling out to Yahweh on Israel's behalf.

As Samuel continued to offer burnt sacrifices, the Philistines approached.

But on that day Yahweh thundered powerfully against the Philistines, and threw them into a panic.

And Israel defeated them.

Samuel erected a stone between Mizpah and Shen, naming it Ebenezer, saying, 'Yahweh helped us up to this point.'

So the Philistines no longer came into Israelite territory. Samuel was judge over Israel all the days of his life. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
