The people went to Bethel and offered burnt sacrifices and said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing from Israel today?'
The Israelites felt sorry for what happened to their brothers the Benjaminites, and said, 'How shall we find wives for those who are left, since we took an oath before Yahweh not to give any of them our daughters as wives?'
Then they asked, 'Of all the tribes of Israel, who did not assemble before Yahweh at Mizpah?' When the people were counted, they found that none of the people of Jabesh-Gilead were there.
'This is what you are to do: Kill every male and any woman who is not a virgin.'
