Gilead was his father and his mother was a prostitute.

Gilead's other sons through his wife had driven Jephthah away saying, 'You will not get any inheritance because you are the son of another woman.'

So Jephthah went off and lived in the land of Tob where a group of worthless men traveled with him.

And later when the Ammonites attacked Israel, the leaders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah, saying, 'Come, be our commander, so we can fight with the Ammonites, and be the ruler of all the people of Gilead.'

So Jephthah went with the the elders and the people made him their commander and leader.

Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, saying, 'For what reason have you come to attack our land?'

The Ammonite king replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'Because when Israel came out of Egypt, they took my lands from the Arnon to the Jabbok and Jordan. Return it now peaceably.'

Jephthah sent messengers back to the Ammonite king, saying, 'Israel did not take the land of the Ammonites. Israel took the land of the Amorites.'

'Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people. And now you will dispossess us?'

But the king of the Ammonites paid no attention to the message from Jephthah.

The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah and he passed through Gilead and Mannasseh and into Ammonite territory.

Then Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, saying, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my hands, I will offer as a burnt sacrifice to Yahweh the first thing that comes out of the door of my house to greet me.'
