The king of Jerusalem, Adoni-Zedek, heard how Joshua had utterly destroyed Jericho and Ai, and how Gibeon had made a treaty with the Israelites.

All Jerusalem was terrified because Gibeon was a large city--larger than Ai--and all its men were warriors.

So King Adoni-Zedek of Jerusalem sent this message to King Hoham of Hebron, King Piram of Jarmuth, King Japhia of Lachish, and King Debir of Eglon: 'Come to my aid so we can attack Gibeon, for it has made a treaty with Joshua and the Israelites.'

So the five kings of the Amorites joined forces and set out to attack Gibeon.

The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua, 'Do not abandon your servants! Come quickly and save us! All the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.'

So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army--all his bravest warriors.

And Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people. I am putting them at your mercy. Not one of them will put up any resistance.'

Yahweh threw them into confusion before Israel.

And Israel thoroughly defeated them at Gibeon.

As they fled from Israel, Yahweh threw large hailstones down on them from the sky.

In fact, more died from the hailstones than were killed by the Israelites' swords.

Then, in the presence of the people, Joshua said to Yahweh, 'O sun, stand still over Gibeon!'.

And so the sun stood still while the nation took vengeance on its enemies.

The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man.
