When Moses was dead, Yahweh spoke to Moses's attendant Joshua. He said, 'Moses is dead. Go now and cross the Jordan River. You will lead the people to take possession of the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.'
Joshua secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, instructing them, 'Go and view the land, especially Jericho.'

They left and went to the house of a prostitute named Rahab.

And they spent the night there.

The king of Jericho was told, 'Some Israelite men have come here tonight to spy on the land.'

So the king of Jericho sent a message to Rahab: 'Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy on the whole land!'

But the woman had hidden the men, and she said 'Yes, the men came to me, but when it was time to close the city gate at night, they left. Hurry after them and you may catch them!'

She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid there.

Rahab said to them, 'Our people are absolutely terrified of you. We have heard what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites whom you put under the curse of destruction.'

The two men crossed back over the Jordan River and said to Joshua, 'All the country's inhabitants are absolutely terrified of us.'
