Yahweh said to Moses: "Come up to me on the mountain. Stay there, and I will give you the stone tablets, the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction."

Moses made ready, with Joshua his assistant, and they went up the mountain of God.

"He said to the elders: "Wait here for us until we come back to you. You have Aaron and Hur with you. If anyone has any matter to settle, let him go to them."

Moses went on up the mountain. Moses stayed on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights.

When the people saw that Moses was a long time before coming down the mountain, they gathered round Aaron and said to him: "Come, make us a god to go before us. For this Moses who brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."

Observing this, Aaron built an altar before the statue and made this proclamation: "Tomorrow will be a feast in Yahweh's honor!"

Early next morning they sacrificed burnt offerings and brought communion sacrifices.
