Joseph died, as did his brothers and all that generation. But the Israelites who went to Egypt were fruitful and prolific. They became so numerous and powerful that eventually the whole land was full of them.

There came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph who said: "We must take precautions to stop them from increasing any further, or if war should break out, they might join the ranks of our enemies, and they might take up arms against us."

Feeling sorry for it, she said, "This is one of the little Hebrews."

The child's sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and find a Hebrew woman to nurse the child for you?"

"Yes, do that," said Pharaoh's daughter.

And the girl went and called the child's own mother.

Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse it for me. I shall pay you myself for doing so."

So the woman took the child away and nursed it.

When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter.

And Pharaoh's daughter treated him like a son.
