A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died.

After Judah had been comforted, he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

Er and Onan’s widow Tamar was told, "Look your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep."

Tamar changed out of her widow's clothes and put on a veil to disguise herself, then sat down at the entrance to Enaim on the route to Timnah. She did this because she saw that, although Er and Onan’s brother Shelah was now grow up, she had not been given to him as a wife.

Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled. Going up to her on the road, he said, "Come then, let me have sex with you."

"What will you give me for having sex with you?" she asked. "I will send you a kid from the flock," he said.

She replied, "Give me a something as a pledge until you send it: your seal, bracelet, and the staff in your hand."

So he gave them to her, and he had sex with her.

Tamar became pregnant. Leaving there, she took off her veil, and put her widow’s clothing back on.

Judah had Hirah take a young goat with him to bring back the pledge, but he did not find her. So he asked the men of that place, "Where is the temple prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?"

But they replied, "There hasn’t been a temple prostitute here."

After three months, Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has been sexually promiscuous, and is pregnant as a result!" And Judah replied, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!"

While they were bringing her out, she gave word, "I am pregnant by the man who owns these! Look and recognize whose these are: the bracelet, seal, and staff!"

13 of 14 Genesis 38:25

Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I am, for I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not have sex with Tamar again.
