So Hamor went to Jacob to talk with him. When Jacob’s sons heard about this, they came in from the field.
Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem is deeply in love with your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. Intermarry with us, and live among us, and the land will be open to you."
Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, "Let me win your favor. Set the bride price as high as you like, and I will give whatever you ask. Just give me the young woman as a wife!"
Jacob’s sons answered, saying, "We can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for it would be a disgrace to us. We will consent only on one condition: you must become like us by circumcising all of your males."
"Then we will give you our daughters to marry, and take your daughters as wives. We will live among you and become one people. But if you will not be circumcised, we will take our daughter and leave."
The offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem, and the young man did what they asked without delay because he wanted Jacob’s daughter Dinah so badly.
Then Hamor and Shechem went to the gate of their city and said to the men of the city, "These are peaceful men. Let them live in the land, and we will intermarry with them, and their livestock and possessions will become ours."
"But they will consent to live with us only if every man among us becomes circumcised. Let’s consent to their demand so they will live among us."
All the men agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and so every male at the city gate was circumcised.
