Jacob was traveling toward Haran when he came to a certain place and decided to stay the night because the sun was going down.

Its top reached to up into the sky, and the angels of God were ascending and descending it.

And at the top of the ladder stood Yahweh, and he said, "I am Yahweh, god of Abraham and Isaac. I will give you the land on which you are lying. And your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth."

When Jacob woke up and felt afraid and said, "What a fearful place this is! It is none other than the house of God and the gate of heaven!"

Jacob got up early and took the stone that was under his head, set it up as a standing stone, and poured oil over it, saying, "If God will watch over me on this journey, giving me food to eat and clothes to wear, and return me safely home, then Yahweh will be my god."
