There was a famine in the land—different than the one in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to King Abimelech of the Philistines in Gerar.

When the men of that area asked about his wife, he would said, "She is my sister." He was afraid to say, "She is my wife," for he thought, "the men of this place will kill me because of her since she is so beautiful."

When Isaac had lived there some time, King Abimelech was looking out a window when he saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.

So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "Surely she is your wife! What have you done to us? One of the people might well have slept with her and you would have brought guilt upon us!"

Then Abimelech orderd all the people, saying, "Anyone who touches this man or his wife will certainly be put to death!"
