Sometime later, the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, and your reward shall be very large."

Abram said, "Lord Yahweh, you have given me no offspring, so Eliezer of Damascus, a slave from my household will be my heir."

The word of Yahweh came to him, "This man will not be your heir. A son that's from your own body will be your heir."

"Look up and count the stars if you can. So shall your offspring be."

"I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur to give you this land to possess, from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates River—the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”
Abram said to him, "Lord Yahweh, how can I know I will possess it?"

Yahweh said to him, "Bring me a 3-year-old cow, a 3-year old she-goat, a 3-year-old ram, a turtle dove, and a young pigeon."

So Abram brought him all these.

And he cut them in half, putting each half opposite the other. But he did not cut the birds.

Whenever birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep.

A terrifying darkness fell on him, and Yahweh said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be enslaved and oppressed for 400 years."
"But I will certainly punish the nation they serve, and afterward they will leave with many possessions. As for you, you shall die in peace and be buried at a good old age."
The sun had set and it was dark. And a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passed between the pieces of the animals.
