Around this time, King Herod arrested some members of the church, and had James the brother of John beheaded.

Seeing that this pleased the Jews, he had Peter arrested as well, putting him in prison with four squads of four soldiers to guard him.

On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was asleep between two soldiers and bound by two chains.

Suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared and struck Peter on the side, waking him up, and said, 'Get up! Quickly!' And the chains fell away from his hands.

When they came to the iron city gate, it opened itself. They went through and then suddenly the angel left him.

Peter went straight to the house of Mary the mother of John who was called Mark where many had gathered together to pray, and he knocked on the door.

A slave girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. Recognizing Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she did not open the door, but ran back inside to say that Peter was at the door.

In the morning Herod put out a search for Peter, but did not find him. After questioning the guards he gave orders for them to be executed.
