While the people were listening, Jesus told a parable.<br>

He said, 'There was once a man of noble birth who needed to travel to a distant land to become appointed king and then return.'<br>

'So he summoned ten of his slaves and gave them ten pounds of silver, telling them, "Do business with this money until I come back."'<br>

3 of 16 Luke 19:13

'But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him with this message: "We don't want this man to be our king!"'<br>

'Nonetheless, he was made king.'<br>

5 of 16 Luke 19:15

'And on his return, he sent for the slaves to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made.'<br>

'The first came in and said, "Sir, your one pound of silver has brought in ten."'<br>

7 of 16 Luke 19:16

'"Well done, my good slave," the king replied. "Since you have proven yourself trustworthy in a very small matter, you shall rule over ten cities."'<br>

'Then the second said, "Sir, your one pound of silver has made five."'<br>

'To this one he said, "And you shall be in charge of five cities."'<br>

'Then another slave said, "Sir, here is your pound of silver. I kept it safely hidden away, wrapped in cloth because I was afraid of you. You are a harsh man, taking what isn't yours, harvesting what you did not plant."'<br>

'"You worthless slave!" said the king. "You knew I was a harsh man, taking what is not mine. Why did you not put my money in the bank so that I could have taken it out with interest when I returned?"'<br>

'And to the ones standing by, the king said, "Take the pound of silver from him and give it to the man who has ten pounds."'<br>

'They said to him, "But sir, he already has ten pounds!"'<br>

'The king replied, "I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away."'<br>
