Herod the tetrarch liked to listen to John, though when he heard him, he was thoroughly baffled. 'Produce fruits consistent with repentance! Even now the ax is laid at the roots of the trees. Every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire!'<br>
And John rebuked Herod on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. John repeatedly told Herod, 'It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.'<br>
So Herod had John locked up in prison.<br>
