The churches in Germany have declared 2003 the “Year of the Bible”. Everyone can contribute their small part to this campaign. For example, Reverend Smith (above) is reconstructing the entire salvific history using Lego. You can test if you have the detailed knowledge required for such tricky work in our Bible quiz.

Oil paints, stone and elephant dung – artists have made use of all kinds of materials for the depiction of stories from the Bible. Reverend Brendan Powell Smith has added another to the list. The cheerful American recreates stories from the Old and New Testaments with Lego bricks, all with great attention to detail and true to the text, even though Smith himself is no real man of the cloth and doesn’t believe in God. More than 50 of these pious tableaus can be found on his page www.thebricktestamemt.com. The Lego Bible is visited 200,000 times a month – reason enough for the self-declared Reverend to keep on building.

Reverend Smith, why are you so obsessed with the Bible?
Since becoming an atheist at the age of 13, I have always been fascinated by the way that so many people consider the Bible to be the holy word of God when so many of the stories seemed to me to be quite brutal and horrifying. Or at least very bizarre.

Which is your favorite Bible story?
The second chapter of Kings 2, 23-25 is hard to beat: A few kids insult Elisha by calling him “baldy”. He curses them and two bears turn up and maul 42 children.

Which character from the Bible was the hardest to build?
God himself. Mainly because Lego has never produced white hair. I needed it, however, so that it would go with God’s beard, so I carved God’s haircut out of a white Lego space helmet.

Did you already have experience with Lego before starting your Bible project?
When I was a child Lego was always my favorite toy, but then as a teenager I thought it was uncool. It was only when I turned 26 that I rediscovered my interest, bought a whole pile of bricks on Ebay, and then I had to start thinking of a worthy project that I could make using such a huge amount of Lego.

Does your site have a deeper intention behind it?
My homepage is intended to entertain people. If there’s a deeper meaning, well, perhaps it’s that in this way people can get to know Bible stories, or learn to view well-known stories in a new light. However, it is not my intention to make anybody change their attitude towards the Bible or religion.

Which story are you working on at the moment?
I’ve just finished Exodus and am now building a few stories about the Israelites as they wander around in the desert and struggle with Yahweh. Then I’ll probably just work my way chronologically through the Old Testament. There are still about 180 stories on my list. It should keep me occupied for a while.

2003 haben die Kirchen in Deutschland zum Jahr der Bibel bestimmt. Jeder kann zu dieser Aktion sein Scherflein beitragen. Reverend Smith (Bild oben) zum Beispiel baut die gesamte Heilsgesehichte aus Lego nach. Ölfarben, Stein und Elefantendung: Allerlei Materialien haben Künstler schon zu Darstellungen biblistcher Geschichten verarbeitet. Reverend Smith, warum sind Sie so bibelversessen?
Seit ich mit 13 Jahren Atheist wurde, hat es mich immer fasziniert, dass so viele Leute die Bibel für das heilige Wort Gottes halten, obwohl mir viele Geschichten ziemlich brutal und schrecklich vorkamen. Oder zumindest sehr bizarr.

Welche ist Ihre liebste Bibelgeschichte?
Das zweite Buch der Könige 2, 23-25 ist schwer zu toppen: Ein paar Kinder beleidigen Elisa, indem sie ihn ,,Glatzkopf" nennen. Er verflucht sie und sofort tauchen zwei Bären auf, die 42 Kinder zerfleischen.

Welche biblische Figur war am schwierigsten zu bauen?
Gott selbst. Hauptsächlich deshalb, weil Lego niemals ein weißes Haarteil produziert hat. Das brauchte ich abet, damit es zu Gottes weißem Bart passt, und so babe ich Gottes Frisur aus einem weißen Lego-Weltraumhelm selbst geschnitzt.

Hatten Sie bereits Lego-Erfahrung, als Sie mit Ihrem Bibelprojekt begannen?
Als Kind habe ich am liebsten mit Lego gespielt, doch als Teenager fand ich es dann uncool. Erst mit 26 interessierte ich mich wieder dafür und habe bei Ebay einen ganzen Batzen Steine ersteigert und dann musste ich mir ein wüdiges Projekt ausdenken, für das ich diese riesige Menge Lego verbauen könnte.

Hat Ihre Seite eine tiefer gehonde Intention?
Mein Homepage soil Menschen vor allem unterhalten. Wenn es eine tiefere Bedeutung gibt, dann vielleicht, dass Menschen auf diese Weise neue Bibelgeschichten kennen lernen oder altbekannte wieder neu betrachten. Ich will aber niemanden dazu bringem seine Einstellung zur Bibel oder zur Religion zu ändern.

An welcher Geschichte arbeiten Sic gerade?
Ich bin gerade mit Exodus fertig geworden und baue jetzt ein paar Geschichten über die Israeliten, wie sie in der Wüste herumwandern und mit Jahwe raufen. Wahrscheinlich werde ich mich dann einfach chronologisch dutch das Alte Testament arbeiten. Auf meiner Liste stehen noch etwa 180 Geschichten. Das wird mich eine Weile beschäftigen.
