1 Corinthians 7:21, 24
...you should make the most of your slavery instead*. Whatever situation someone was in when called, let him remain in it with God.
*Note:A literal translation of 1 Corinthians 7:21 would be "A slave when called? Do not have any concern over it. If you can become free, rather use [it]." This ambiguous verse has two possible interpretions, each contradicting the other. The first interpretation is that Paul is advising slaves not to worry about their condition as slaves, and that even if they have a chance to become free, they should rather use their current condition as slaves. The second interpretation is that Paul is telling slaves that they should not worry about being slaves, and yet if they do have a chance to become free, they should use that chance. While Biblical scholars are divided on Paul's intended meaning, most modern English translations favor the latter interpretation (the NSRV and NAB excepted). The former meaning is favored here as being more in harmony with Paul's overall message in 1 Corinthians 7: that Christians should stay in whatever condition they were in when they were called, even if it is an unfavorable one (ie. married, a slave, or circumcised).
